This past Friday I was in my room chilling with my roommate Maddie and our friend who was visiting us at Wazzu Natalie. Maddie was working on finishing up an essay, I was surfing the internet, and Nat was on her phone. Nat asked us what we were doing for the day, to which we replied "Don't know." "Let's go to Idaho!" she said. We asked her why, and she said she really wanted to just go somewhere and explore. I suggested that we go to Montana, because I've never gone there before, and Nat agreed. Nat and I started looking at towns in Montana that were close to the Idaho/Montana border. We considered going to Missoula but decided not to because it was a good 4 and a half hour drive. Next, we considered going to Troy. Troy is really close to the border, has a population of about 800, and is a 3 hour and 40 minute drive. Finally, we decided to go to a town named Heron, only a 3 hour and 20 minute drive, with a population of 200. With our destination set we started packing. Comfy travel clothes? Check. I-pods, phones, and chargers? Check. Swimsuits and towels? Why the heck not! Maddie kept asking us if we were serious, and our response was, "HECK YES! Start packing!" Maddie finished up her essay, submitted it, and then called her twin sister Mikayla. Mikayla said she wanted to come! So we told her to pack and get ready to go. We ran and purchased about $30 in snacks. We had chips galore, gushers, fruit roll-ups, and tons of drinks. We all piled into Nat's Mustang and hit the road!
Our first stop on our adventure was the gas station! Nat got out of the car to fuel up, but couldn't get the nozzle to stay in, so she asked Maddie for help. Maddie got out, and it immediately started working, so Nat went and sat down in the car. Mikayla and I busted open our lays, doritos, and cheetos, and started to munch away. As we pulled away from the gas station we blared, "Hakuna Matata" singing about how we had no worries. The second we crossed the border to Idaho and saw the Idaho sign we all knew we wanted a picture. We screamed at Nat to stop. She turned the car around, pulled onto the side of the road, and we all sprinted across the highway to the Idaho sign and snapped a quick picture. After we piled back in the car we continued our two and a half hour long drive to Sandpoint. At one point we rolled down all the windows on the Mustang, and had the hood open. Our hair was flying, we were freezing, and we were belting out our favorite songs. We made tons of funny faces at drivers, had a little kid watching us with wide eyes as we danced in the car, and ate a ton of junk food. We played tons of different songs, some being Disney tunes, some rap songs, some top 20 pop songs, and some oldies but goodies.
Finally, we arrived in Sandpoint, Idaho! We parked the car, and Nat went running towards the water. You see, when we started this adventure we decided we were going to go swimming in Montana and Idaho. But, once we got there we realized the water was ICE COLD. Natalie put her toes in the water, and came back saying there was no way we were going swimming it was "too cold." So I said, "It's all in your head." To which she started singing, "My mind is telling me no, but my body… my body is still telling me noooo." We sat around and debated whether we wanted to just keep heading to Montana or not, and decided to just keep driving. The drive towards Montana was gorgeous! It was complete with lakes, rivers, and mountains. We even saw some snow! But, as we got closer and closer to Montana, it got darker and foggier. All of the sudden Maddie screamed, "DEER!!!" And Natalie slammed on the breaks. There were four deer directly in front of the car. Once they moved we kept driving…. at about 15 mph. Natalie was hunched over the steering wheel, and Maddie, Mikayla, and I were scoping for deer. We were all petrified of hitting a deer, the fog was creeping us out, and we didn't have cell reception. We had over five different close calls with hitting deer, but the last time was the one that made us hate Montana. We were going about 20mph and about 15 miles from Heron, Montana when out of the corner of our eyes we see a HUGE deer. Perhaps the hugest deer we've ever seen. Natalie slammed on the breaks. Turns out that the huge deer, was actually a huge moose. And we were staring straight at it. All of the sudden it starts coming towards us…. charging towards us. "MOOOSE CHARGE!!!" I scream! And all of the sudden Natalie is gunning it. After our near accident with the moose we were all so petrified, we just wanted to go home to Pullman. But, we didn't give up. We kept going on.
Eventually we passed a Post Office and a couple of houses. Our GPS kept taking us back into the country though, and eventually our GPS said, "You have arrived at your destination." We all started nervously laughing, because we were literally surrounded by fields, deer, and nothing else. We quickly decided to get the hell out of Montana. We stopped at one of the houses we passed, and asked how far away the nearest food place was. This guy with a thick country accent says, "It's about 20 miles away, in Clark County." We all nod our heads, pretending we know where in the heck Clark County is. Finally Nat breaks and says, "And how do we get there?" After learning that we would have to go further into Montana we quickly decided to head back to Sandpoint, Idaho and get food there. But, as we were driving back we got followed by a pickup truck that was swerving and flashing it's brights at us. We panicked, and eventually turned off on a random road to lose the truck. The rest of our trip passed rathe uneventfully, but it will be something that we remember for the rest of our lives.
